Die Adaption des Dramas des deutschen Dramatikers Georg Büchner erzählt in der Version von Kentridge die Geschichte eines immigrierten Arbeiters in einer kargen Industrielandschaft um Johannesburg im Jahr 1956. Mit grafischen Illustrationen hinterlegt, beschreiben die Handpuppen den gequälten Geist von Woyzeck, der versucht, seinem Leben einen Sinn zu geben.
