Jèrôme Bel > The show must go on!
20 actors move pensively on an empty stage to 19 songs from pop-history, animate the DJ and even the stagecraft to join the movement. Nothing else. The actors just stand there, staring into the hall. It is some kind of showdown: who’ll be the first to give in, the actors or the audience? Who will invite who to dance? Performance or anti-theatre? The precisely set dramaturgical structure of The Show must go on stands in a gap of revelation of cultural habits on stage and of activation of individual memories of the people sitting in the auditorium. Each spectator has an individual archive of memories , a physical memory, that is activated. Memories of a lost love, of a particular dance; suffering, laughing, death and sorrow can be ironically reflected as fragments of a language of dance.
Jérôme Bel > the French editor and choreograph is one of the most controversial representatives of the European contemporary dance scene. He is deemed to be a pioneer of conceptual dance performances.
