The excellent Canadian string quartet – Quatuor Bozzini challenging extreme experimentations of contemporary music: as the original Bali exotism of Claude Vivier in Pulau Dewata, homage to a divine temple written for four pianos, and here thought again for a string quartet; or the structural improvisations of Malcolm Goldstein that leave space for the abstract rituals of Michael Osterle, composer who digs in tradition to re-invent contemporary music mechanical processes. Maximum emblem of experimentation is the piece of the American composer, George Crumb who in Black Angels leads a string quartet in a fight between good and evil, inspired maybe by the sad war in Vietnam taking place at the time of his composing, as he remembers in his notes “finished on Friday the Thirteenth, March, 1970, in tempore belli”. The same tradition of the string quartet is here put into discussion, so much that each instrument is associated by a set of instruments sided by the contributions of vocal and sound-effects.
