In August 191, a congress of the Second International was planned in Vienna. The aim was to react against the looming start of the war by means of a pan-European general strike. However, the congress did not take place; the war beat it to it. What would have happened if the vision of the general strike had come about, if the allegedly fateful run of events had been redirected? What if the grasp at national identity had been hushed by an International refusal? Would we, in case the general strike had succeeded, be living in a time when national identity appeared as an imposition out of distant past?
