Through a complex system of symbols Matthew Barney explores with Cremaster the mythologies of our times. The focal point is the evolution of the body, which, according to the artist, is able to grow only through a strenuous competition with itself. Cremaster, a contemporary saga structured in five films, takes as a starting point the human reproductive system... the evolutionary process is metaphorically described by the artist through biological, psycho-sexual and morphological references.
